Most Americans do not meet their daily recommended servings of fruits and vegetables. Instead, the Standard American Diet exceeds the recommendations of the amounts of refined grains, added sugars, saturated fats, and sodium.
Why is this? Unfortunately, processed foods still make up a large part of the diets of so many Americans. They’re easy, convenient, and cheap, making it harder to resist popping them into the grocery cart.
Green juices are made from nutrient-dense green vegetables like spinach, kale, cucumber, and celery. Dark leafy greens, for example, are high in vitamins A, C, K and minerals like calcium, iron, and potassium.
Although green juices can consist of only green veggies, some people also like to add a small amount of fruit to their green juices. Citrus fruits and green apples, for example, are popular ingredients (and also high in vitamin C). Ginger is also another common feature in green juice recipes and can give them an extra boost due to its anti-inflammatory properties.
Green juices are healthy and versatile – making them a great addition to your daily routine!
Juicing is a convenient way to increase your fruit and vegetable intake. Although the nutritional benefits are more or less the same as eating the fruit or vegetable whole, juicing offers a ton of benefits:
There are three main types of juicers that process the fruits and vegetables in different ways, although the end result is the same – healthy green juice.
Masticating Juicer
Also called a slow juicer, these juicers squeeze the produce slowly to extract the juice. The slow pressing results in a high-quality, cold-pressed juice that lasts longer because the enzymes and antioxidants remain intact. They have a high yield and work well with both hard and soft produce. The only downside is that these juicers can come with a hefty price tag.
Centrifugal Juicer
This is probably the most common type of juicer. It shreds the produce with tiny blades while a spinning basket separates the pulp and juice. The juice is pressed through a fine-mesh sieve. This type of juicer is the fastest and most affordable but can be noisy. Centrifugal juicers work best with hard produce like carrots and apples and can work with whole fruit or vegetables, significantly cutting down on prep time. They can also produce a lot of foam, which is found unappealing by some users.
Triturating Juicer
A triturating juicer, also known as a twin-gear juicer, extracts juice using two rotating twin gears that crush and grind fruit and vegetables while pushing out the dry pulp. Like masticating juicers, these juicers have a high-yield and are quieter than centrifugal juicers. They work well with both hard and soft produce but may be harder to clean and take up more room than the other two juicers.
Add your favorite fruit
Although many people love the taste of a healthy green juice just on its own, if it’s not to your taste there are still plenty of ways you can get the perks of this liquid nutrition bomb. Although most green juices contain more vegetables than fruit, adding your favorite fruit to the juice might help you enjoy the taste more. Fruits like green apple, pineapple, grapefruit, orange, melons, and berries can make the juice more palatable for you. Plus, they also contain vitamins and minerals for an extra boost.
Use milder greens
Some people also recommend starting out with slightly less bitter leafy greens such as spinach rather than kale. Herbs like mint or basil can also do wonders for your tastebuds. Avid juicers also recommend adding a small piece of fresh ginger (peeled) to the juicer, roughly a one-inch piece will do. The kick from the ginger can help to offset any bitterness from the greens.
Use a recipe
If you’re new to juicing then following an existing recipe may be easier than creating your own. If you just throw together whatever you have on hand, you may end up with a strange-tasting combination, so following a recipe can also help you avoid waste.
Add superfood powders
You can make your green juice even healthier by adding superfood or protein powders to juice when it’s ready. Superfood supplements such as a greens powder, for example, works really nicely with freshly-made green juice. They offer additional health benefits that can help support your immune system or digestive health to make your morning juice a nutritional powerhouse.
